This exhibition celebrates the existence of the Medal Art New Zealand Group for 35 years.
They honoured their ‘origins’ and founders - celebrating their long journey by showcasing their achievements. At the time, the group organisers began to realise that among their members and guests there was a particularly strong level of commitment, skills and affinity with the genre. This strength was illustrated by numerous commissions and purchases by various museums and public institutions. It was a time to celebrate as fellow artists and acknowledge the level of creative intelligence and skill accomplished by them.
I was asked to submit two pieces for this show. They had to adhere to an idea of 'Origins'. 'Earth Story' responds to the theme by exploring the material the sculpture is made from. Sand is born from rock; transformed by time, tides, weather, and the movement of water. This work returns it to a solid form—tracing the story of the earth itself, shaped by endless cycles of erosion and renewal.
The second work is my interpretation of a medallion. Once again using words as a base. It is the smallest I have gone with this process. Each face is different. 'Tide Song' responds to the theme of Origins by exploring the material the sculpture/medal is made from. Sand is born from rock; transformed by time, tides, weather and the movement of water. This work returns it to a solid form - a song carried on the waves and formed by the ebb and flow of the tide. Another lovely collaboration with the writer Jenny Bornholdt
